| Dr. Wael Badawy, P.Eng. (Ph.D. 2000, M.Sc. 1998, M.Sc.1997 B.Sc. 1994) is the CTO and Founder of Smart Camera Technologies Inc. He is also an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at the University of Calgary and a Member of the Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education. He is the director of the Video and Information Processing Group and an active member of the ATIPS Laboratories. Dr. Badawys research is in the areas of Digital Signal Processing and VLSI applications, he is developing techniques for digital video processing (including the analysis of live cells in image sequences) and VLSI architectures for video application. Dr. Badawy is the inventor of the hierarchal adaptive structure mesh (HASM) method of tracking biological cells. Over the last four years, Dr. Badawys research has been directed towards developing Low Power Architectures For Video-Object Tracking. His research has focused on video object coding. Over the last five years, Dr. Badawy has authored and co-authored 41 refereed journal papers, 92 refereed conference papers, 35 technical reports, and 4 edited books in the area of real-time video compression architectures as well as digital signal processing algorithms, architectures and their VLSI implementation. He has received 14 international and national technical awards including "Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society and IEEE Computer Society Award for Academic Excellence in Computer Disciplines" and the "Micralyne Microsystems Design Award". He was recently named the "2002 Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award" for video stream architecture in low bit rate applications and Micronet Best Project 2002. He has also received 12 best paper awards. Dr. Badawy has been elected Fellow of the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society, the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He is currently serving as Chair of CAC/JTC1/SC6, "Telecommunications and Information Exchange Between Systems" and as head of the Canadian Delegation for the ISO/JTC1/SC6. He is also regular accredited as a Canadian delegate and a voting member of the CAC/JTC1/SC29 and the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29 "Coding of Audio, Picture Multimedia and Hypermedia Information". Dr. Badawy serves on several international technical committees including as a voting member of the Virtual Socket Interface VSI-Alliance and IEEE-Standard Association. Also, he is highly involved
with the IEEE Circuits and System Technical Societies. Dr. Badawy
has filed six technology disclosures in the areas of compression and
streaming architectures and two trade marks (GRAPPTM and
WebConcordeTM). He collaborates successfully with numerous national
and international researchers in academia (including at U. of Purdue,
U. of Louisiana, and Northwestern U.) and industry (including
Panasonic Inc., Xilinx Co., STMicroelectronics Inc., Canadian
Microelectronics Co., and CDL-Systems Inc.). Dr. Badawy regularly
serves as technical reviewer for NSERC, Research Grants Council of
Hong Kong, and he is an associate editor of IEEE-CJECE and guest
editor of 4 journal issues in IEEE transactions and journals. Also,
he is a regular member of the Organization committees, Editorial
Boards and Reviewer Board of IEEE-transactions and several
international technical journals and conferences. |
