Scholarship

 

Part I: General Requirements

 

Selection Criteria

 

The following criteria have been set out for applicants of the ASIS Scholarship program.  The criteria have been divided into 5 sections each valued on a point system for a total overall value of 100 points.  This system will be used to compare qualified applicants.

 

 

1.      CHARACTER: This section is valued at 20 points. It examines the applicant’s good standing with the Criminal Justice System and requires the applicant to provide a copy of the results of a criminal record check that has been conducted by a local police force.  It also inquires as to the applicant’s membership in ASIS.

 

a)      Criminal record check = up to 5 points

b)      Current member of ASIS = 5 points (partial points will not be awarded)

c)      Length of Membership in ASIS (in years) = up to 5 points

d)      Membership with other security organizations = up to 5 points

 

2.      ACCREDITATION: This section is valued at 20 points.  It examines the applicant’s formal education completed in the security profession and whether the applicant has achieved professional certification such as Certified Protection Officer, Certified Security Supervisor, and Certified Protection Professional, etc..  It considers whether the applicant has been awarded recognition of achievements from educational institutes and any other educational contributions to the security profession.

 

a)      Professional Certifications = up to 7 points

b)      Formal Education completed = up to 7 points

c)      Professional Development courses completed = up to 4 points

d)      Other educational contributions = up to 2 points

 


 

3.      COMMITMENT: This section is valued at 25 points.  It examines the applicant’s future educational goals and commitment to the field of security.  It inquires as to the applicant’s educational plans in respect of his/her future interests in the security profession.  It gives consideration to how the scholarship will benefit the applicant and whether the applicant has been awarded other scholarships.  It examines how the applicant will contribute to the security profession once the applicant’s educational requirements have been achieved.  Please provide examples with your responses.

 

a)      Future (long term) plans in the Security Industry = up to 5 points

b)      Future plans for continuing education in the Security Industry = up to 5 points

c)      How the scholarship will benefit the applicant in terms of future goals in security = up to 5 points

d)      How the applicant plans to contribute to the Security Industry once his/her educational goals are achieved? = up to 10 points

 

4.      PARTICIPATION: This section is valued at 35 points.  It examines the applicant’s recognition within a community, place of employment, ASIS chapter, and the security profession.  It examines the applicant’s contributions to the community through volunteer work including achievements and recognition by employers and/or peers.  It inquires as to how long and how often an applicant has been a volunteer.  It examines how other ASIS members view the applicant over a period of time, and if the applicant has volunteered for ASIS functions.

 

a)      Employment and/or volunteer participation within the security community = up to 15 points

b)      Participation within ASIS locally = up to 15 points

c)      Volunteer participation within the community at large = up to 5 points

 

Please be specific and thorough when filling out the application.  All applicants will be considered for qualification to the scholarship.  All information on the application will be considered and reviewed, as well as kept confidential by the Educational Award Committee.
